Desertification: Gov. Buni launches tree-planting initiative with 2 million seedlings

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has launched an ambitious campaign to plant two million trees across the state in 2025.

The initiative, inaugurated on Tuesday in Damaturu, is part of the state’s strategy to restore degraded land, combat climate change, and reclaim a greener environment for future generations.

Governor Buni outlined a detailed plan to ensure the campaign’s success. Each of the state’s 17 local government areas will receive 3,000 seedlings.

A significant portion of the trees will also be distributed directly to households, encouraging every citizen to participate in the greening effort.

“This initiative is vital to our fight against desertification, we are determined to protect and restore the land fertility that we have lost to the encroaching desert,” Buni stated.

The campaign, themed “Reclamation of a Greener Version of our Great Lands,” builds on years of environmental action.

This new push according to the Governor, aligns with Yobe’s inclusion in the national Great Green Wall initiative, which aims to plant 50 million trees across Nigeria’s frontline states.

With the rainy season underway, Governor Buni called on communities, schools, and local organisations to actively participate.

“Let us all take advantage of this season to ensure the success of this campaign and secure our environment,” the governor declared.
