Deplorable Road: Residents of Kano LG cry out for help as rainy season begins

Story by Jamilu Lawan YAKASAI

There is growing tension and deep concern in the Kazaurawa/Unguwar Ganji community of Rano Local Government Area, Kano State, as the rainy season approaches, yet the only road linking the area to surrounding communities has fallen into a deplorable state, raising fears of isolation and increased hardship.

Speaking on behalf of the community, a representative of Rano Local Government Council, Hon. Ahmed Abdullahi Jibrin, expressed the frustrations and fears of residents.

He stated, “The current state of the road has made life extremely difficult for our people, especially during the rainy season. It becomes nearly impassable, cutting off access to essential services like hospitals, markets, and schools. Our farmers are also unable to transport their produce, which affects their livelihoods.”

He appealed to both state and federal governments for urgent intervention to reconstruct the road, emphasising that the economic well-being and safety of the people rely heavily on this critical link.

Also speaking, a respected elder and community leader, Alhaji Wada Kazaurawa, stressed that the road connects at least seven communities — from Rurum town to Bakin Fa, Kazaurawa Ghana, Gunduma, Gidan Ganji, Bul, Saya – saya — eventually linking to Kibiya and Tudun Wada LGAs.

He further revealed that construction work on two key bridges along the road was abandoned about 14 years ago.

“Tragically, many pregnant women have lost their lives due to the inability to transport them to healthcare facilities,” he lamented.

The residents are urgently calling on relevant authorities to prioritise the rehabilitation of the road before the rainy season fully sets in.

They fear that further delays could lead to increased hardship, accidents, and further isolation of the affected communities.
