Dangote Group agrees to redeploy sacked refinery workers after labour truce

Following a reconciliation meeting between labour representatives, Dangote Group, and government officials, it has been agreed that workers dismissed by Dangote Petroleum Refinery will be redeployed to other subsidiaries within the Dangote Group.

The decision was announced by the Ministry of Labour and Employment after two days of talks that included Dangote’s management, PENGASSAN, the Finance Ministry, and labour officials.

The statement emphasised that the redeployment will occur without loss of pay, ensuring that the sacked workers maintain their income during the transition.

It also pledged that no worker would be victimised for participating in the labour dispute.

The talks addressed concerns over the process used to disengage employees, with the parties agreeing to review those procedures for fairness and compliance.

The government reaffirmed that unionisation is a constitutional right that must be respected in all corporate settings.

During the meeting, Dangote representatives acknowledged the need for resolution and agreed to initiate the absorption process immediately.

PENGASSAN, in turn, agreed to begin the formal process of calling off its strike action in good faith.

Earlier, the dispute had escalated after over 800 workers were terminated by the refinery, triggering threats of a nationwide industrial action.

The union had accused Dangote of anti-labour practices, while the company had defended the terminations as part of a reorganisation.

The federal government’s mediation was critical to averting a full strike that threatened supply disruptions in the petroleum sector.
