Court sentences 44-year-old woman to 5 years for human trafficking

A High Court in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced a 44-year-old woman, Goodness Daniel, to five years in prison for human trafficking.
The ruling, delivered on June 27, 2025, by Justice Peace Otti, included an option of a ₦2 million fine. Daniel was found guilty of engaging in the buying and selling of human beings, in violation of Section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

The case was prosecuted by the Anambra State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which described the judgment as a milestone in its ongoing fight against human trafficking. Court documents revealed that Daniel, who was first arraigned on July 9, 2024, was also ordered to pay ₦2.6 million in restitution to the victim, who testified as a prosecution witness.
NAPTIP reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and holding perpetrators accountable, noting that the ruling underscores the importance of strengthening enforcement efforts and support for survivors.
