Commendable Strides in Anti-Corruption: Tinubu government’s recovery of 753 houses from Emefiele a wake-up call, by Dr Tukur Madu Yemi

In what stands as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption, the Federal Government has taken possession of 753 houses recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from the former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele. This bold move, accomplished within the first two years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is a welcome demonstration of political will and a firm commitment to restoring integrity in public service.

It is only right to commend the Tinubu-led government for empowering the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies to take decisive actions against some of the most powerful figures in the country. Recovering such an astonishing number of properties from one individual lays bare the extent of past abuses of office, while also highlighting the potential for meaningful reform when leadership is guided by accountability.

However, this achievement must not be seen as the climax of the anti-corruption war—it should mark the beginning of a more vigorous and uncompromising crackdown on graft. The truth is that Nigeria remains deeply affected by systemic corruption. Therefore, security agencies and anti-graft institutions must continue to pursue all high-profile cases with unwavering resolve. No sacred cows should be spared, and no name should be considered too powerful to face the law.

More importantly, individuals whose names have already been publicly linked to monumental corruption must be swiftly and transparently prosecuted. Nigerians are aware of many of these individuals. Their continued freedom undermines the credibility of our justice system and weakens public trust in government institutions. Bringing them to justice will send a powerful message that the era of impunity is over.

Indeed, President Tinubu has a golden opportunity to etch his name in history. If his administration takes bold steps to ensure that all high-profile corruption cases—especially those already in the public domain—are brought to a just and conclusive end before May 29, 2025, it will be a landmark achievement. On this score alone, his government can earn widespread acclaim and renewed confidence from the Nigerian people.

To truly win the war against corruption, efforts must go beyond the recovery of stolen assets. The government must ensure the diligent prosecution of offenders, reform institutional processes, and guarantee that justice is not only done but seen to be done. Only then can we build a nation rooted in fairness, transparency, and the rule of law.

A corruption-free Nigeria is possible—but only if we act decisively, without fear or favour.
