CJN to inaugurate 57 new SANs as Supreme Court welcomes new legal year

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, 29 September, inaugurate 57 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) as part of activities to mark the start of the 2025/2026 legal year of the Supreme Court.

The ceremony, scheduled to take place in the main courtroom of the apex court, will be accompanied by a special session where the CJN is expected to deliver a “State of the Judiciary” address.

According to a statement by the Supreme Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Festus Akande, the address will review the performance of the Supreme Court and the judiciary at large during the 2024/2025 legal year.

The statement added that other major stakeholders in the justice sector will also make presentations. These include the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Traditionally, the event not only celebrates the conferment of the prestigious rank of SAN on new members of the legal profession but also reflects on challenges and reforms within the judiciary.

The rank of SAN, often likened to the title of Queen’s Counsel (QC) in the United Kingdom, is the highest honour conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria who have distinguished themselves in advocacy and contributions to the profession.

Justice Kekere-Ekun is presiding over her first new legal year ceremony since assuming office, a development many observers say adds symbolic weight to the proceedings.

The ceremony is expected to commence at 10 a.m. and will feature speeches, reflections, and the swearing-in of the new SANs before dignitaries and members of the legal community.
