Celebrating Women’s Day: Honoring strength, resilience, equality
Today, March 8, 2025, marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
It is a day to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and honor the incredible contributions of women throughout history and in our daily lives. In Nigeria, this day holds special significance as we celebrate the remarkable women who have shaped the nation and continue to inspire future generations.
The Origins of Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has its roots in the early 20th century, born out of the labor movements in North America and Europe. It was first observed in 1909 in the United States and later adopted by the United Nations in 1975.
Over the decades, it has grown into a worldwide movement, uniting people across borders to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality.
The Theme for 2025: “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity”
This year’s theme, “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity,” underscores the idea that when women are given equal opportunities, entire communities and nations thrive. From education and healthcare to leadership and innovation, empowering women creates a ripple effect that benefits everyone.
Celebrating Women’s Achievements
Women have made remarkable strides in every field imaginable. In science, pioneers like Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin paved the way for modern breakthroughs.
In politics, leaders such as Kamala Harris, Jacinda Ardern, and Malala Yousafzai continue to inspire generations. In the arts, figures like Maya Angelou, Frida Kahlo, and Beyoncé have used their voices to challenge norms and uplift others.
In Nigeria, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of prominent women who have made significant contributions to the nation and beyond. Here are a few notable Nigerian women who have left an indelible mark: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, A globally renowned economist, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history as the first woman and first African to serve as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Challenges Ahead
Despite the progress, significant challenges remain. Gender-based violence, unequal pay, limited access to education, and underrepresentation in leadership roles are just a few of the issues women continue to face globally. In Nigeria, cultural and societal barriers often hinder women’s progress, but the resilience and determination of Nigerian women continue to break these barriers.
How We Can Contribute
International Women’s Day is not just a celebration; it is a call to action. Here are a few ways we can contribute to the cause:
1. Educate and Advocate: Learn about the issues women face and use your voice to advocate for change. Support policies and initiatives that promote gender equality.
2. Support Women-Owned Businesses: Empower women economically by choosing to buy from women-led enterprises.
3. Mentor and Empower: Share your knowledge and experiences to uplift other women. Mentorship can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth.
4. Challenge Stereotypes: Break down gender stereotypes by encouraging diversity in all fields and celebrating non-traditional roles for women.
5. Celebrate Women’s Stories: Take the time to listen to and share the stories of women from all walks of life. Every story matters.
A Day of Unity
International Women’s Day is a reminder that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it is a human issue. It requires the collective effort of everyone, regardless of gender, to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
As we celebrate today, let us honor the women who have paved the way, support those who are breaking barriers, and commit to building a future where equality is not just a goal but a reality. Together, we can empower women and, in doing so, empower humanity.
