Bride arrested for staging fake kidnapping to avoid repaying brother’s money
In Delta State, police arrested 27-year-old Merit Alice, who admitted to staging her own kidnapping after misusing ₦3.6 million given to her by her brother.
The money was originally intended to purchase a tricycle, but Alice spent it instead on her bridal shower and hotel expenses for friends at her wedding in March.
Under pressure from her brother to repay the funds, Alice conspired with two accomplices to fake the abduction.

According to the Delta State Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, on July 20, Alice told her husband she was coming home but then disappeared, prompting claims that she had been kidnapped.
A ransom of ₦3 million was paid following numerous calls demanding the money. However, the husband reported the case to the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Squad. Police arrested one of the suspects, who eventually revealed the truth behind the scheme.
In her confession, Alice stated that she and two others, including a security operative named Peter who worked where she previously was employed, orchestrated the act. She admitted collecting the ransom money, withdrawing ₦2.5 million from a POS shop, and giving ₦500,000 to her accomplices.
Expressing regret, Alice attributed her actions to the mounting pressure to repay her brother.
Meanwhile, SP Bright Edafe praised the police officers involved for their thorough investigation and successful resolution of the case.
