Bandits reportedly rape over 30 female students in Lafia university attack

Story by Susan Mbamah

A recent attack on the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State has brought the region’s security crisis to a new and horrifying level. A large convoy of heavily armed bandits reportedly invaded the university, leaving a trail of rape, assault, and bloodshed.

According to sources within the university community who requested anonymity, students have been under constant attack from bandits and thugs for over two weeks, facing rape, abductions, and killings.

Since its establishment in 2011, the Federal University of Lafia has seen a significant increase in its student population, which has outpaced the available on-campus accommodation. This has forced many students to live in off-campus student villages and slums known as Akunza, Gandu, and Burkan Kwato.

These areas, sources say, “have long served as the hide out for criminal elements mostly bandits and thugs who have ravaged the peace and security of the University over time.”

Two years ago, the university management reportedly raised alarms about the bandits’ activities in these student villages, which included regular attacks, rape, kidnappings, and the killing of students. Although the university implemented security measures, a source stated that they were “without real lasting success.”

It is believed that lasting security for the students cannot be achieved without the full cooperation of the host communities. According to Daily Independent, these communities are alleged to be “collaborating with these criminal elements through some kind of providing cover and shelter for the bandits.”

This is said to be a major challenge in combating banditry and kidnapping, as host communities often withhold vital intelligence.

“The safety and well-being of undergraduate Students have come under severe attack and compromise arising from the ineptitude of the indigenous host communities in partnership with the University Management to protect and defend the students,” a source added.

An investigation by the newspaper revealed that, “On the 26th of July 2025 alone, over 30 female students were raped by the bandits who mobilized and invaded the student villages in large convoy and vehicles.”

The report described the incident as “similar to the Boko Haram episode in the Chibok and Dapchi Girls Kidnap incident,” adding that it is “a sad reminder of the collapse of the Nigerian State that has led to the gross devaluation of life and human right abuses of the Nigerian people in the hands of bandits and terrorist.”

During the same attack, male students who tried to resist were reportedly “brutally hacked and butchered by the bandits,” who left “a trail of blood, tears and sorrows on the mind of the University community.”

As of now, the police in Nasarawa State have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
