Bandits attack NUJ secretariat in Yobe, shoot police officer

Unidentified gunmen launched an attack on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, in the early hours of today, injuring a police officer on duty.
The incident occurred around 2:00 am when the assailants opened fire, hitting the officer in the leg. He is currently receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the Police Hospital in Damaturu.
Chairman of the NUJ Yobe State Council, Comrade Rajab Ismail Mohammed, described the attack as disturbing and a serious threat to the safety of journalists in the state. He called on security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and bring the attackers to justice.

The NUJ further appealed to authorities to enhance the security of media professionals and press facilities across the state, stressing that such attacks could hinder press freedom and public access to information.
While details of the motive remain unclear, police authorities have reportedly begun investigations to uncover those responsible. The union emphasized that protecting journalists is essential to the growth of democracy and public accountability.
