Arsenal edges Tottenham in race for Eberechi Eze with £60m agreement

Arsenal has reportedly moved ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign Eberechi Eze, with an agreement in principle reached to bring the forward to the Emirates for £60 million.

Sources told BBC Sport that despite Tottenham being in talks to sign him, Eze prefers a move to Arsenal, the club where he began his youth career. While a deal between Spurs and Crystal Palace was reportedly agreed upon on Wednesday after 10 days of talks, it was never finalized.

Arsenal’s offer includes an additional £8 million in add-ons. The Gunners are said to have concerns over a knee injury to attacker Kai Havertz, and the 27-year-old Eze would provide a new option for coach Mikel Arteta.

On Wednesday, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner stated that both Eze and Marc Guehi, who is linked with Liverpool, would be starting in Thursday’s UEFA Conference League play-off tie, as they remain “committed to the team.” Sources also told BBC Sport that Eze wants to complete the move to Arsenal before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The England international’s contract has an expired release clause worth an initial £60 million, plus £8 million in add-ons. Eze, who joined Crystal Palace from Queens Park Rangers for £19.5 million in 2020, was a key player last season, scoring 14 goals, including the winner in their 1-0 FA Cup final victory against Manchester City. His current contract runs until the summer of 2027.

If Arsenal successfully signs Eze over their North London rivals, it would be a major moment of the transfer window, one that is sure to be celebrated by their fans. The news comes after Tottenham seemed to have had the deal “almost signed and sealed.”

Arsenal has been monitoring Eze for a long time, despite already having a number of options in attack with Ethan Nwaneri signing a new deal and the recent addition of Noni Madueke to the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
