APC national chairman, Umar Ganduje, resigns

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has formally resigned from his position, citing health-related reasons.

Ganduje, a former two-term Governor of Kano State, tendered his resignation letter to the APC National Working Committee (NWC) earlier on Thursday. In the letter, he stated that his decision was driven by a need to focus on his personal health and overall well-being.

“After due consultation with my family and close associates, I have decided to step down from my role as National Chairman of our great party to attend to pressing health matters,” Ganduje wrote in his letter.

However, party insiders have indicated that Ganduje’s resignation may also be linked to growing political pressure within the party. In recent weeks, there has been increasing agitation from various party stakeholders, particularly regarding the APC’s internal zoning arrangements and leadership dynamics.

Just days before his resignation, protesters reportedly gathered at the APC national secretariat in Abuja demanding his removal. The protesters accused Ganduje of fostering regional bias and contributing to instability within the party’s national leadership.

While the APC is yet to issue an official statement confirming his replacement, sources within the party say an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to be convened in the coming days to appoint an acting chairman.

Ganduje was appointed APC National Chairman in 2023, succeeding Senator Abdullahi Adamu. His tenure has been marked by internal disputes and criticism over his leadership style and political alignment.
