Another widespread darkness as national grid collapses

Nigeria’s national power grid has experienced another system collapse, leading to widespread blackouts.

Data from the independent system operator (ISO) revealed a dramatic drop in electricity generation on Wednesday, falling from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the grid’s failure in a statement to its customers, explaining that the outage across its franchise areas was due to “a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today.”

The company assured customers of ongoing efforts to restore power, stating, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised.” The AEDC concluded by thanking customers for their “patience and understanding.”
