Anambra medical doctor freed after abduction

Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical doctor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, who was abducted by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, has been freed.

Onuigbo was kidnapped outside his home in Nnewi while returning from work and was released in the early hours of Thursday, after enduring two days in captivity.

His release was confirmed by colleagues from the hospital’s Urology Department and Martina Onwuka, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NAUTH.

Details about his release remain unclear, including whether a ransom was paid or if he managed to escape. However, his safe return sparked celebrations at the hospital, where staff and doctors expressed their relief and joy.

A colleague from the Urology Department, speaking anonymously, shared their gratitude for Onuigbo’s release but acknowledged the likely psychological impact of such an experience. “We are thankful he is back, though we’re unsure whether any ransom was paid or if he was physically harmed. The psychological trauma of such an event is significant. The most important thing is that he’s home with his family, and we thank God for his safe return,” the colleague said.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, also confirmed that Onuigbo had safely reunited with his family.
