Airstrike accidentally kills family of 6 in Katsina

Seven civilians were reportedly killed in an airstrike that hit Yauni community in Zakka Ward, Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State.

According to reports, the attack followed a gun battle earlier in the day between security personnel and bandits, which left three security officers dead, including two police officers and an operative of the state-owned Community Watch Corps (CWC).

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the violence stemmed from the local government election held on Saturday. The bandits had planned to target voters in Zakka village, but security forces were alerted to the threat and intervened, resulting in a shootout. In the exchange, one police officer and a CWC operative were killed, and a third police officer later succumbed to injuries.

Following the gunfight, a military fighter jet, reportedly sent as reinforcement, dropped a bomb on Yauni community, located south of Zakka. The attack killed six members of one family, and a woman was injured.

This is not the first such incident in Katsina; in July 2022, a military airstrike in Kunkunni village, also in Safana Local Government Area, killed at least two people.

Attempts to get comments from the police and military regarding Saturday’s attack were unsuccessful.
