A Mother’s Agony: 34-year-old graduate takes his life after NYSC completion
A heartbreaking tragedy struck in Kaduna State when Bryant Michael Ogah, a 34-year-old graduate, tragically took his own life after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
The incident occurred in a hotel in the Television area of Kaduna South, where Bryant was found unresponsive after ingesting a harmful substance, believed to be Sniper.
Bryant, who had just participated in the Passing-out-Parade of his NYSC program in Chikun Local Government Area, had struggled with mental health challenges for nearly 12 years.
Sources close to the family revealed that despite the efforts made by Bryant’s family to support him through these challenges, he had been battling severe psychological distress that ultimately led to his tragic decision.
In an emotional interview with Arewa PUNCH, Bryant’s mother, who identified herself simply as Mrs. Ogah, shared the devastating details of her son’s final days. She explained that although the family had always provided love and support, Bryant’s ongoing health issues weighed heavily on him, particularly his inability to contribute financially to the family.
“He was the first son and the first child of the family, and he always wanted to contribute to the family’s well-being. But his mental health condition made it difficult for him to achieve his goals,” Mrs. Ogah said, tears streaming down her face. “He was tired of the situation. He could not help himself, and he felt like there was no need to continue living.”

Bryant’s mother explained that, despite the family’s constant reassurance and encouragement, her son struggled to see a way forward. “We kept telling him that we are not complaining about his health challenges, and that seeing him alive brought us joy. But he felt that his health condition had caused shame, and he was unable to turn the family’s situation around for the better,” she added.
The tragic events unfolded on December 23, 2024, when Bryant told his family that he was going to visit a friend in a different community. However, this was merely an excuse to carry out his tragic plan. Instead of visiting his friend, Bryant checked into a hotel in the Television area of Kaduna South, where he drank the poisonous substance.
When Bryant failed to check out of the hotel after 24 hours, hotel staff grew concerned and knocked on his door. Upon receiving no response, they forcibly entered and discovered Bryant on the floor, still breathing but unconscious. They immediately rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he passed away shortly after arrival.
Mrs. Ogah, clearly still in shock, reflected on her son’s struggles: “He was so overwhelmed by his mental health issues that he felt there was no way out. Despite our constant support, he couldn’t bear the thought of being a burden to the family. He felt like he was failing us.”
The news of Bryant’s death has deeply affected his community, where he was known as a hardworking and kind individual despite his personal battles. The family has expressed their devastation and hopes that this tragic incident will shed light on the importance of mental health care and support for those facing similar challenges.
The Public Relations Officer for the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, initially stated that the police were unable to confirm the incident but later confirmed the tragic news. “The command is investigating the matter,” he added.
