Super Eagles climb to 41st in FIFA ranking, return to Africa’s top five

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have climbed four places to 41st in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, returning to the top five football nations in Africa.

The updated rankings, released on Friday by FIFA, reflect Nigeria’s strong recent performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which saw them rise from 45th position.

The three-time African champions overtook Ivory Coast, now 42nd globally, after securing a 2-1 win over Lesotho in Polokwane and a dominant 4-0 victory against Benin Republic in Uyo — results that confirmed their spot in the continental playoffs for the 2026 World Cup.

Next, the Super Eagles will face Gabon, ranked 77th in the world and 15th in Africa, for a place in the final playoff round, where Cameroon or DR Congo could be potential opponents.

On the continental scene, Morocco retained its status as Africa’s highest-ranked team despite slipping one place to 12th globally. Senegal follows at 18th in the world, while Egypt (32nd), Algeria (35th), and Nigeria (41st) complete the continent’s top five.

Globally, Spain remains number one, while Argentina has climbed back into second place ahead of France.
