Taraba University suspends SUG over controversial ‘Gender Swap Day’ event
Story from Mercy Adaje
The management of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, has announced the indefinite suspension of its Students’ Union Government (SUG) following allegations of misconduct during the recently concluded 2025 Students’ Week celebration.
The decision came after photos and videos from the controversial “Gender Swap Day” went viral online, sparking widespread criticism from the public and the university community.
In a statement signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the university described the scenes from the event as “regrettable” and contrary to its values, dress code, and moral principles.

Bako said the management, after an emergency meeting on Monday, October 13, reviewed the incidents and found the SUG leadership negligent in supervising and coordinating the event.
As part of the resolutions, the university announced the indefinite suspension of the SUG to allow for a complete restructuring of student leadership on campus. A new framework will soon be introduced to promote accountability, discipline, and responsible representation among student leaders.
“Students whose actions misrepresented the university’s image will face disciplinary action,” the statement read. “Those found involved in criminal acts have been arrested and handed over to law enforcement.”
In response, the suspended SUG president, Victor Mishak Abednego, apologized to the university management for the embarrassment caused by the event and pledged to ensure future activities comply with the institution’s regulations.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to fostering academic excellence and moral integrity, warning that similar acts of indiscipline would not be tolerated in the future.
