Chaos as two killed, three injured in Manchester synagogue attack

Story by Susan Mbamah

A violent assault outside a synagogue in Manchester, UK, has claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others seriously injured.

The incident occurred at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

According to police, the attack involved a car driven into pedestrians, followed by a stabbing spree.

Armed officers responded quickly, shooting and killing the suspected attacker on the scene.

Authorities also reported that suspicious items were found on the attacker, prompting a bomb disposal unit to be deployed.

Greater Manchester Police declared the incident a terrorist attack and immediately launched a major investigation.

First responders arrived swiftly, rendering aid to victims and securing the area around the synagogue.

The Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism branch has taken lead, and the site is under heavy guard as forensic teams comb the scene.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, returning early from a European summit, condemned the attack as “appalling,” especially for having occurred on Yom Kippur.

He called for heightened protection of Jewish communities and ordered deployment of additional security at synagogues nationwide.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla released a joint statement expressing sorrow and solidarity with the victims and their families.

International Jewish organisations and diplomats also voiced alarm over the assault, warning of rising antisemitic tensions.

Local community leaders in Manchester urged calm, calling on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

The synagogue was evacuated and temporarily closed as authorities conducted searches and secured surrounding streets.
