I may forsake my 2027 presidential ambition to back younger candidate — Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said that, if circumstances demand, he might forsake his own presidential ambition in 2027 to support a younger candidate.

The statement was made during an interview on BBC Hausa, where Atiku indicated that timing and national interest would guide his decision, not personal ambition.

When asked whether he is certain to run in 2027, Atiku declined to make a firm commitment, stating, “It’s not yet time. When the time comes, I will decide. What we are doing is for the good of the nation.”

He added that if a younger contender defeats him, he would concede gracefully and offer his support and guidance.

The former vice-president characterised his current focus as strengthening the coalition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), rather than signalling his candidacy.

Atiku reaffirmed that his political party gives priority to youth and women, saying it is part of a deliberate strategy to promote generational inclusion.

He also encouraged young Nigerians to be active in politics, take up leadership roles, and not wait to be handed power by elders.

Despite his openness to yielding, Atiku emphasised that any decision would come at the appropriate moment, not prematurely.
