Trump mocks UN in GA address, says body “not working for peace”

In a sharply critical address at the United Nations on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump accused the global body of failing to support American-led peace efforts, saying the UN “is not working for peace.”

He told the UN General Assembly that during his tenure he resolved several conflicts but never received assistance from the UN, asserting that the organisation routinely issues strong statements without follow-through.

“I ended seven wars… and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help,” Trump said, reiterating his belief that the UN produces “empty words” rather than tangible solutions.

Despite his criticisms, Trump also reassured the assembly that the United States stands “100%” behind the UN and its potential, though he warned that the institution must show results, not just rhetoric.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres responded by emphasising the UN’s mediating role and its limitations, noting that the Security Council’s action depends on cooperation from major powers such as the U.S. and Russia.

Guterres acknowledged that while the UN cannot unilaterally enforce peace, it can offer diplomacy, oversight and moral leadership, but is constrained by veto powers and funding challenges.

The U.S. has reduced its contributions to several UN agencies in recent years, including UNESCO and the Human Rights Council, further straining relations between Washington and the international body.

Trump’s criticisms arrived amid heightened global scrutiny of conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and elsewhere, where expectations of UN intervention are rising among observers and affected populations.

His speech also drew attention to technical malfunctions during the address, the escalator at UN headquarters stalled as he ascended, and his teleprompter reportedly malfunctioned, moments which Trump turned into rhetorical jabs about UN inefficiency.
