US vetoes Gaza ceasefire resolution at UN Security Council, faces backlash

The United States has once more used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block a resolution calling for an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza, along with the unconditional release of hostages currently held by Hamas.

The draft resolution, supported by 14 of the 15 council members, also demanded Israel lift all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza. The US justified its veto by claiming that the resolution failed to properly condemn Hamas and did not sufficiently recognise Israel’s right to defend itself.

Meanwhile, other council members described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” highlighting confirmed famine conditions and worsening restrictions on aid.

Diplomats say this marks the sixth U.S. veto concerning the Gaza conflict since it began in October 2023.

Despite these repeated vetoes, global sentiment appears to be shifting: recent votes in the UN General Assembly have overwhelmingly endorsed resolutions supporting a two-state solution, and many nations are calling for increased humanitarian access.

The veto further isolates the US and Israel diplomatically, according to analysts, particularly as countries across Europe, Asia and the Middle East increasingly press for stronger international action.

Islamic Jihad accuses US of complicity in “genocide”

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine denounced the U.S. veto, describing it as fresh proof of Washington’s active role in what it called “genocidal crimes” against the people of Gaza.

In a statement carried by the Yemen News Agency (Saba), the group said the Trump administration had become “an active partner and a main instigator” of Israel’s ongoing military campaign.

It argued that the veto, paired with the Israeli government’s escalating attacks under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, exposes a coordinated agenda to reshape the region.

The group also cited remarks by Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, claiming they revealed collusion between the U.S. and Israel over the partitioning of Gaza.

It accused Washington of showing “deliberate contempt” for international law, humanitarian norms, and the people of the Middle East, while criticising regional governments for being “either powerless or complicit.”
