Irish president urges Israel’s expulsion from UN, blasts EU silence

Irish President Michael D. Higgins has demanded Israel’s removal from the United Nations, alongside states supplying it with arms, while criticising the European Union for failing to act decisively.

In remarks reported by the Irish Times, Higgins denounced what he described as a man-made famine in Gaza and called for an immediate end to trade ties with Israel.

He recalled a May 18 meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog at Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration in the Vatican, where Herzog assured him that two Irish food shipments would reach Gaza the same day.

Higgins said he later learned from Ireland’s embassy that the aid was blocked in Jordan after Israel refused entry, proof, he argued, of deliberate obstruction.

“There should be no hesitation any longer in ending trade with people who are inflicting this on our fellow human beings,” he declared.

The speech came just days after a UN commission concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, accusing it of using starvation as a weapon during its nearly two-year campaign.
