Tech billionaire Larry Ellison, world’s new richest man, held “advanced talks” for Premier League club takeover
Larry Ellison, the billionaire co-founder and chairman of Oracle, has briefly eclipsed Elon Musk as the world’s wealthiest individual, and his rise to the top has an intriguing connection to English football. While Musk’s fortune, once valued at a staggering $425 billion by Forbes, experienced a recent downturn, Ellison’s wealth surged, propelling him to the pinnacle of the global rich list.
Tech Titans Trade Blows at the Top
Ellison’s monumental ascent occurred midweek, with his fortune ballooning by an astonishing $89 billion, bringing his net worth to an incredible $393 billion. This unprecedented spike launched him past not only Musk but also fellow tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, and Jeff Bezos.
The reason behind this financial rocket-ship ride was a spectacular performance by Oracle shares, which soared over 40% after the company released a glowing forecast for its cloud infrastructure division and announced groundbreaking deals in the artificial intelligence sector.
The report also reveals that Ellison has a history of pursuing interests beyond the tech world, including English football. It was in 2016 that the American billionaire reportedly held “advanced talks” to purchase Aston Villa, a storied club that had just been relegated from the Premier League after 29 years in the top flight. At the time, the club’s American owner, Randy Lerner, was looking to sell. Aston Villa supporters, frustrated by the club’s decline and desperate for a new injection of investment, were excited at the prospect of one of the world’s richest men taking the helm.

However, despite the promising discussions, the takeover never materialized. Instead, the club was sold to Chinese businessman Tony Xia.
This move left many fans to ponder what might have been had Ellison completed the deal and brought his vast fortune and business acumen to Villa Park. The club has since been under different ownership, but the “what-if” scenario of an Ellison-led Villa remains a point of fascination for many.
