DSS drags Sowore, Meta, X to court over posts targeting Tinubu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, alongside social media giants X Corp and Meta Inc., for posts deemed defamatory towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As per Daily Trust, the case, lodged before a Federal High Court in Abuja, follows Sowore’s refusal to delete online comments accusing the president of lying about corruption in Nigeria.

The charges, filed by M.B. Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, along with four other DSS counsel, centre on posts shared via Sowore’s verified X and Facebook accounts on 25 and 26 August 2025.

One count cited a message on X where Sowore wrote: “THIS CRIMINAL @OFFICIAL PBAT ACTUALLY WENT TO BRAZIL TO STATE THAT THERE IS NO MORE CORRUPTION UNDER HIS REGIME IN NIGERIA. WHAT AUDACITY TO LIE SHAMELESSLY!”

The DSS alleges the remarks were false and capable of inciting public disorder, breaching the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.

Another charge focused on a similar post made on Sowore’s Facebook page, with prosecutors claiming the content was defamatory and intended to damage the president’s reputation.

In all, five counts were levelled against Sowore, accusing him of spreading false information, defamation, and deliberately causing fear and disturbance through social media posts.

Reports earlier indicated the DSS had written to X, demanding Sowore’s account be deactivated, and had given him an ultimatum to remove the posts, which he refused.

Reacting on his X handle, Sowore confirmed the charges, describing them as “novel offences invented by the DSS” and vowing to attend trial. “It’s hard to believe there’s anyone sensible left in these offices that should be making Nigeria work. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow,” he wrote.
