New York governor Hochul backs Mamdani for mayor, vows to resist Trump’s influence
New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Sunday 14 September, endorsed Zohran Mamdani in the city’s mayoral race, warning against what she described as the damaging policies of President Donald Trump since his return to office in 2025.
Hochul said the daily stream of “abhorrent and destructive policies” from Washington had left New Yorkers struggling with jobs and rising living costs.
In an opinion piece for the New York Times, she wrote: “Since taking office in January, Mr. Trump has killed jobs and dragged down our economy with tariff tax hikes that make life more expensive for working families.”

Trump, in response, has claimed that Mamdani would “completely crush New York City.”
Criticism of Mamdani has been mounting from the White House. In July, press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused him of “peddling anti-Semitism, praising pro-Hamas groups, wanting Israel abolished, and believing wealthy Americans should not exist.”
Hochul, however, stood firm in her support, saying: “Mr. Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda, with urgency, conviction and the defiance that defines New York. And we must never allow Mr. Trump to control our city like the king he wants to be. Anyone who accepts his tainted influence or benefits from it is compromised from the start.”

As governor, Hochul has prioritised making New York more affordable. She now says that mission is her shared concern with Mamdani.
Her plans for the city include cutting income tax for middle-class families and providing free school meals for students. While acknowledging progress, she stressed that “a lot of work lies ahead” to achieve these goals.
