Final-year student arrested for dumping newborn in Nasarawa bush
A final-year student at the College of Education, Akwanga, has been taken into custody by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly leaving her newborn baby in a bush.
The infant was found on Wednesday morning near a primary school on AA Koto Street in the Akwanga Local Government Area.
Residents who heard the baby’s cries found the infant wrapped in a piece of cloth. They were shocked to discover the baby was still alive and immediately contacted the police and local authorities.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest to News Point Nigeria in Lafia on Thursday. “The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested,” Nansel stated.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia for thorough investigation and prosecution.”
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld for legal reasons, is reportedly an NCE student in her final semester. The incident has caused outrage among Akwanga residents, who described it as a disturbing trend.
“This is heartbreaking. We can’t understand how someone would carry a baby for nine months and just leave the child to die,” said Mrs. Hauwa Isa, a local trader.
This case is the latest in a series of similar incidents across Nigeria, sparking new debates about child welfare and mental health for expectant mothers. In July 2025, a farmer in Kebbi State, Kabiru Kamba, found a newborn baby girl buried alive on his farmland.
He and others dug up an unusual ridge to find the baby miraculously crying and alive. Kamba and his wife, who had recently had their own child, took custody of the rescued infant and offered to raise her.
Child rights advocates believe such cases underscore the need for public education, access to family planning, and psychosocial support for vulnerable women and girls.
The Nasarawa State Police Command has vowed to see the case through to its conclusion. The suspect will face prosecution once the SCID’s investigation is complete.
The Commissioner of Police also urged residents to continue providing timely information to help prevent such tragedies.
