Gunmen kill one, abduct 3 passengers in Kogi highway attack

Gunmen, believed to be kidnappers, have killed one person and abducted three others from an 18-seater bus on the Okene-Lokoja Road in Kogi State.

The incident took place around 3 p.m. on Monday in Aku village, Adavi Local Government Area. The assailants reportedly stormed the highway and forced the Toyota bus, with registration number Benue DAP 325 LG, to stop.

The attack was interrupted when a patrol van from the Kogi State vigilante group arrived at the scene. An eyewitness, identified as Jamiu, reported that the vigilante’s timely intervention prevented a worse outcome.

“Luckily for the passengers, a vehicle of the Kogi state vigilante group patrolling the highway intercepted the gunmen’s operation, leading to the exchange of firepower,” Jamiu said.

The gunmen, however, were able to flee into the bush with three passengers before the vigilantes could fully secure the scene. “Eventually, the gunmen fled into the bush with three of the passengers, while the driver and three others were rescued by the vigilante,” he added. One person was also killed during the attack.

Ibrahim Omeiza Sani, the Controller-General of the Kogi State Vigilante Services, stated that his team is already tracking the gunmen to rescue the abducted individuals.

As of the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, has not responded to inquiries about the incident.
