‎‎Story by Maryam Saleh Isah

‎On 29th August, the Campus Security Committee Yobe State University held an interactive meeting with the presidents and secretaries of all unions across the institution, led by the Dean of Students Affairs.

The meeting aimed to enlighten the student leaders on the student handbook guiding the university’s operations, particularly on hostel accommodations, electricity usage, musical instruments and music, exit procedures, and regulations regarding on-campus students’ absence from the university.

‎In his address, the Dean stressed the dangers of mismanagement of association funds, describing embezzlement as a major source of conflict within unions. He reminded student leaders of the general regulations guiding student organisations and urged them to uphold accountability in their leadership.

‎The purpose of the interaction was to inform student leaders about the dos and don’ts of the university, and to mandate them to take note of the stated rules governing students’ affairs as outlined in the Students’ Handbook. The meeting was also convened in response to the recent incident that led to the loss of lives and injuries among some students, highlighting the urgent need for adherence to regulations and enhanced awareness.

‎‎Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Campus Security Committee, highlighted that the meeting-being the first of its kind, creates a platform for understanding the needs and interests of students. He assured that similar engagements will be organised quarterly or annually to ensure smooth leadership transitions and effective decision-making among students.

‎He further emphasised that security on campus is a collective responsibility. While the university’s security personnel have a key role, student leaders must also actively contribute. He reminded the students that while they enjoy full freedom, it comes with responsibilities. As ambassadors of the university, their publications and external interactions project the institution’s values and image. Therefore, the task ahead for everyone is to embody professionalism, respect and an ethics-driven mindset.
