RE: Northern leaders, prominent Islamic scholars urge Tinubu to recognise 3 Nigerian teens, by Suleiman Gambo Bakoro

Recently, three promising, intelligent, and ambitious young girls from North East Nigeria, Nafisa Abdullahi Aminu, Rukayya Muhammad Fema, and Khadija Kashim Kalli from Yobe state, who represented Nigeria at the global competition, defeated over 20,000 contestants from 69 countries across the globe to become the world’s best in english language skills and debate competition at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals in London, United Kingdom.

This stands as a resounding testament to the untapped brilliance, resilience and academic potential flourishing in Yobe, which positioned the state not only as a beacon of excellence but also as an inspiring symbol of global competitiveness emerging from Nigeria’s North East Region.

One very interesting and unprecedented thing about this glorious feat was how young Nafisa Abdullahi Aminu, a seventeen-year-old girl who represented Nigeria through the Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) Mamudo in Yobe state, outperformed over 20,000 students from 69 countries, including many from the native english-speaking nations.

These ambitious, promising and intelligent young girls deserve to be honoured by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria without being requested or lobbied to do so by anybody!

I feel dismayed to hear and watch prominent Islamic scholars like Professor Isah Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Dr. Abdallah Gadon Kaya, prominent Northern Leaders, and other well-meaning Nigerians appealing and begging the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to honor these young girls who have done the country proud, just like the way he honored the Nigeria senior female national football team, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, and the Nigeria female national basketball team with cash (100,000 US Dollars), apartments in Abuja, and national honors! I feel very sad and pained seeing our very respected and valuable Islamic clerics and northern elders and other well-meaning Nigerians appealing to and begging Mr. President to honor these three young girls who have done the nation proud! This is something unprecedented that deserves a national honour and celebration just like others!

Our dignity and image as a people should not be taken for granted! Since the President doesn’t know our dignity as well as recognize and value us as northern people who gave him over 62% of the votes more than the entire Southern region, that brought him to power in the 2023 Presidential election, then let’s forget about him! We the northern people should stop appealing and begging him to do the needful! Let us wait for the appropriate time to pay him back for whatever good or bad that he has done to the northern region!.

There is no need for us to be appealing and begging him to honour these young girls! We have not lost our pride and dignity as people who very well know their values, dignity and image!

Even the opposition Presidential candidate who contested against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the PDP in the 2023 Presidential election, His Excellency, the former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (Waziri of Adamawa), has made a personal commitment by awarding a full scholarship to the three young girls through his foundation (Atiku Abubakar Foundation) in a press release issued on 5th August 2025 and signed by the acting secretary of the foundation, Professor Ahmadu Shehu.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar pledged to sponsor Nafisa, Rukayya, and Khadija for the remaining years of their secondary school education and to also pay for their complete study in any university of their choice in the world after completing their post-primary school education at the Tulip International College in Yobe state on a fully-funded scholarship.

What an act of kindness and generosity from the famous Wazirin Adamawa! Thank you so very much, Wazirin Adamawa! The Northern people of Nigeria, especially the people of Yobe State, shall pay you back at the appropriate time for your show of sympathy, kindness and generosity to these young girls!

It is very unfortunate that celebrating football success is more valued than celebrating academic excellence in this great country!

What goes around comes around!
What goes up must surely come down!
We are waiting for the right time!
