Police rescue kidnapped students, apprehend 3 suspects

In an intelligence-led operation, operatives of the state’s Police Command have successfully rescued two kidnapped students in the Ikwo Local Government Area.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Anthonia Uche-Anya, confirmed the rescue on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Abakaliki.

She stated that the students were found unharmed inside an uncompleted building where they were being held by suspected kidnappers. Three suspects were apprehended and are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

CP Uche-Anya also provided a detailed update on the Command’s operational achievements between July and mid-August 2025:
131 suspects were arrested for various offenses.
52 suspects have been charged, with others awaiting arraignment.
The Command recovered six vehicles, 15 assorted firearms, and 50 rounds of ammunition.
Several criminal hideouts were identified and dislodged.

The Commissioner emphasised that these successes underscore the Command’s renewed dedication to tackling insecurity and ensuring peace.

She noted that land and boundary disputes are common due to the state’s agrarian nature, especially during the farming season. To address this, the police have deployed early warning systems and are using non-kinetic approaches, engaging traditional and community leaders to resolve disputes through dialogue.

“We continue to monitor flashpoints with land and boundary issues,” she said. “Our proactive strategy is yielding encouraging results, but we remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of our people.”

CP Uche-Anya also gave updates on other successful operations:
Ekoli Edda Crisis (July 9, 2025): Three suspects, Amarachi Ude, Idika Ama Okoro, and Sunday Ama Olughu, were arrested in connection with the killing of one Udu Nnachi.

Ivo LGA Crisis (August 14, 2025): The police arrested Agboti Kingsley, a mercenary allegedly hired to cause conflict in Ihie/Ezza Ekembe.

The Commissioner commended residents for their support and urged them to continue reporting criminal activities. “The Command under my leadership remains resolute in protecting lives and property. Together, we can sustain peace and security,” she assured.

She also provided the Command’s Control Room Hotline (07064515001) for citizens to report suspicious movements or emergencies.
