Councillor dies days after taking office
Oluwakemi Rufai, the newly sworn-in councillor for Ward C1 in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has died. She passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, after a brief illness, just two weeks after being sworn into office.
As the only female councillor in the state, Rufai’s death has sent shockwaves through the community.
The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LG, Sesan Olowa, and the Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area, Rasaki Kasali, both confirmed her passing in separate statements, calling it a “huge shock to the council and her community of service.”

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also mourned her death. Party spokesperson Seye Oladejo described Rufai as a “rising star within the APC” who “embodied commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion.”
He noted that even in her brief time in office, she “reflected her dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s ideals.”
Oladejo offered his condolences to the deceased’s family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents, vowing that Rufai’s “legacy of service, vision and courage… will not be forgotten.”
