Students at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi are protesting a security breach after a gang of 15 to 20 armed robbers invaded a male hostel early Monday morning.

The assailants, who were armed with knives, robbed occupants of their mobile phones and valuables, and stabbed two students who resisted.

The attack, which occurred around 4 a.m. at the Gwalameji campus, sparked outrage among students. They blocked the Bauchi–Dass highway near the school gate, protesting what they called “recurring security lapses.”

The demonstration was dispersed by security operatives using tear gas, and the institution’s management responded by suspending academic activities and ordering students to vacate the campus within two hours.

Troops from the 33 Artillery Brigade, police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were deployed to restore order.

The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police visited the campus and assured students that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators and strengthen security.

A security source told Zagazola Makama that the prolonged nature of the robbery pointed to a lapse in security patrols and emergency response, especially given the area’s history of criminal incidents.

“The robbers operated for some time without interruption, which suggests that security patrols and outposts in the area need to be more proactive, especially since Gwalameji has a history of criminal incidents,” the source said.

Following a tip-off later that day, police arrested three suspects: Mansur Yakubu (also known as Chasu), 20-year-old Abbas Auwal, and 20-year-old Musa Bala (alias Babannani).

The suspects, all from the Lushi area of Bauchi, confessed to the crime and named several accomplices who are still at large. Authorities said efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining suspects.
