Court issues final deadline for Dasuki’s 10-year trial

Story from Jameel Lawan Yakasai

A Federal High Court in Abuja has given the Federal Government new dates to conclude the prosecution of former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

The trial, which began in 2015, involves charges of unlawful possession of firearms and money laundering.

Justice Peter Lifu has set a new timeline for the case, scheduling sessions for September 24, 25, and 26. He instructed the government to present any remaining witnesses and evidence to support its seven-count amended charge.

After the prosecution closes its case, Dasuki will be expected to present his defense.

During the last hearing, a prosecution witness, Monsur Mohammed, a DSS exhibits keeper, testified that operatives searched Dasuki’s homes in Abuja, Kaduna, and Sokoto.

Mohammed detailed items allegedly recovered from Dasuki’s Abuja residence, including two compact discs, two GT Bank cheque books, multiple phones, a laptop, various financial documents, and a CD about the arrest of Mohammed Yusuf.

The court admitted these items into evidence as exhibits MSD 015 to 034.

The witness also claimed that a search of Dasuki’s Sokoto residence yielded $150,000 and ₦37.6m, which were deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Prosecution counsel Oladipupo Okpeseyi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, requested an adjournment to present additional items from four search warrants.

Justice Lifu granted the request but warned the Federal Government to be prepared to close its case at the next sitting. He then scheduled the September dates for the trial’s conclusion.
