Tragic flooding in Ebonyi claims 8 lives, displaces thousands

A devastating flood has claimed at least eight lives in the ancient kingdom of Kpoghirikpo, located in the Itim community of Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

The disaster, which followed heavy rainfall, has also affected more than 3,000 households and 800 farmlands, causing a significant displacement crisis.

Residents reported that among the victims were a mother and her four children. While a search and rescue team managed to save four other children, four bodies have already been recovered and buried, with the search continuing for the missing.

The flood hit while many farmers were on their farmlands trying to salvage their produce, resulting in the destruction of crops and a severe blow to the local economy.

In response, the community has appealed to both the federal and state governments for urgent intervention and relief materials.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Ann Aligwe, confirmed that an emergency response team from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been deployed to the area. She stated that the state government has provided relief materials for the victims and advised residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations.
