Police condemn vigilantism after farmland feud kills 2, injures 2

Story from Ibraheem El-Tafseer

The Yobe State Police Command has condemned recent acts of vigilantism that led to the deaths of two individuals and left two others injured in Gulani Local Government Area (LGA).

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Friday, August 9, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m., following a violent attack over a farmland dispute between residents of Zango (Gulani LGA) and Azare (Gujba LGA). The two villages lie along the boundary between the two LGAs.

The victims, Sani Makeri, 40, and Abdullahi Maicitta, 35, both residents of Zango, lost their lives in the attack, while two others sustained serious injuries. The injured were promptly evacuated to a specialist Hospital in Damaturu for medical treatment.

The police responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from the Village Head of Zango and have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, who fled the scene.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the farmland dispute had been simmering since the last farming season. Despite previous intervention efforts by the police and the State Boundary Adjustment Committee, tensions had continued to rise between the two communities.

Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, psc, fdc, strongly condemned the attack and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.

“The Yobe State Police Command will not tolerate any form of lawlessness or extrajudicial retaliation. All individuals found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.

The police also advised farmers and community members to respect established boundaries and report disputes through legal and peaceful channels.

The Command conformed that both parties involved will be charged to court to ensure justice for the deceased and injured, as well as to prevent further escalation..
