Meet the Tech Guru now in Charge of NERC: Abdullahi Ramat, the 39-year-old NERC chairman
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
At 39, Ramat brings a diverse background in engineering, public sector management, and digital systems to the role. His appointment is expected to help with regulation, consumer-related issues, and investor policies within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Ramat’s extensive educational background includes a PhD in Strategic Management from Lincoln University, a Master’s in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from a university in India, and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano. He has also earned executive certifications from prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, Google, Microsoft, and Gonzaga University.
His journey began with a primary school certificate from a community school, followed by his junior secondary education at Government Technical College, Ungogo, and senior secondary education at Dawakin Tofa Science College. He furthered his studies through an IJMB Programme at the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano.

From 2021 to 2024, Ramat served as the Executive Chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area, where he introduced a blockchain-based electronic identity system for issuing indigene and resident identification cards.
During his tenure, he also founded the Ungogo Identity Management Agency (UIMA) and the Ungogo Internal Revenue Agency (UIRA), which implemented a cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that boosted internally generated revenue by over 300 percent.
Before this, he was the Managing Director of the Kano State Metropolitan Agency, where he managed energy retrofitting projects to lower power consumption in public facilities. He also developed a surveillance platform called LURA, which uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology, biometrics, and real-time data analysis to improve local safety and security.

Ramat is also the founder of AG Ramat Global Link and AG Ramat Global Apex, two companies that provide engineering and technology services. He also established the Ramat Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the needy.
The foundation has enrolled over 500 dropouts back into school, distributed 200,000 writing materials to primary schools, and built and renovated primary healthcare centers and schools. In collaboration with Multipro Inc., India, the foundation provided free artificial limbs to 200 amputees on July 2, 2018.
His contributions have earned him several accolades, including being named one of the “50 Most Influential Young African Leaders” by the Pan African Youth Leadership Foundation in 2022 and being recognised by the Kano State House of Assembly as the “Best Performing Local Government Chairman.”
Following his appointment, Ramat expressed his gratitude on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “From leading just a single LGA to now being entrusted with matters concerning all the 774 LGAs through NERC,” he wrote. “Thank you, Mr. President.”
