5 arraigned for illegal waste dumping in Lagos

Five individuals have been brought before a mobile court in Lagos’ Oshodi area for allegedly dumping waste in unauthorized areas.

It was gathered on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the enforcement team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority.

Those arrested were identified as Sunday Chidiebere, Favour Odoh, Daniel Okunola, Michael Obi, and Amaka Abel.

They were allegedly caught dumping refuse along the median at Ago Palace Way in the Okota area of the state.

Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post via his official X handle on Tuesday, said the suspects had been taken to court for prosecution.

He wrote, “Early this morning, the @Lawma_gov enforcement team arrested five offenders for dumping waste along the median at Ago Palace Way, Okota. They have been taken to the Mobile Court at Bolade, Oshodi, for prosecution.”

The arrests come as part of the state government’s renewed clampdown on violators of environmental laws.

In a similar exercise earlier in May, it was reported that 74 individuals were apprehended in a single-day operation for environmental infractions across key locations within the Lekki axis, including Falomo Bridge, Eko Hotel Roundabout, Oniru Beach, Lekki Phases 1 and 2, and the 1004 Estate.

Wahab has continued to reiterate the government’s commitment to maintaining environmental sanity and ensuring offenders face the full weight of the law.
