Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, on Tuesday presided over the state security meeting and pledged to address rising tension between farmers and herders amongst other criminal activities threatening the peace of the state.

Buni, who was represented at the meeting by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, emphasised the need for proactive strategies to safeguard citizens and curb violence.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the governor’s adviser on security matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd.), said the meeting reviewed the security situation in the state and acknowledged that there have been some remarkable improvements at the moment.

He noted how weeks back some weekly markets in the state were shut down due to security concerns regarding public safety, and revealed that presently, two out of the three markets have resumed operations.

Abdulsalam acknowledged that the development is a demonstration that the security situation has significantly improved in the state.

Regarding the farmer-herder conflicts, he stated that the security stakeholders held a strategic engagement about two weeks ago with leaders of farmers’ and herders’ associations.

He said they have mapped out certain strategies that are now yielding results and leading to a reduction in clashes between the two groups.

During the security meeting, filing stations were given operating hours pending when the security situation improves.

Abdulsalam appealed to members of the state’s traders association to relocate to the new Modern Market Damaturu.
