Yobe govt, Action Against Hunger support fire victims in Nguru, Karasuwa
Story from Kasim Isa Muhammad
In a renewed effort to bring relief and restore livelihoods to fire victims, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in partnership with the humanitarian organisation Action Against Hunger (ACF), has provided critical support to families affected by recent fire outbreaks in parts of Nguru and Karasuwa Local Government Areas.
The intervention came in the aftermath of a major fire that swept through Askema village in Mirwa Kabir Ward of Nguru Local Government Area on March 21, 2025. Additional fire incidents were later recorded in several other communities across Karasuwa Local Government Area. In total, 117 households were affected, with 51 families in Nguru and 66 in Karasuwa suffering significant damage to their homes and properties.
Communities that received the support include Askema in Nguru; and in Karasuwa, the settlements of Shakke in Fajiganari Ward, Jajimaji in Jajimaji Ward, Attah Kura in Karasuwa Galu Ward, Zango, Tabawa Gasma, and Garin Amadu in Gasma Ward, as well as Bla Biri, Bukarti in Bukarti Ward, and Balngibiya in Jajeri Ward Fajiganari. These communities were among the hardest hit by the fire outbreaks, with dozens of homes reduced to ashes and many families left without shelter.
To assist the victims in beginning the process of rebuilding, SEMA and ACF distributed a range of essential building materials. These included roofing zinc, cement, wooden planks, and roofing nails, all critical items required for the reconstruction of damaged homes.

The support aims to provide immediate relief and help affected residents return to some level of normalcy as quickly as possible.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr Mohammed Goje, explained that the intervention was part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to supporting victims of emergencies and reducing the suffering of vulnerable populations.
He acknowledged that while the support may not cover the full extent of losses experienced, it was a step towards rebuilding the lives and livelihoods of the affected families.
“This is more than just material assistance,” Dr Goje said. “It is a demonstration of the Yobe State Government’s dedication to compassionate leadership and timely response in the face of adversity. The losses are painful and in many cases irreplaceable, but with support like this, we can begin the journey toward recovery.”
Representatives of SEMA, who were present during the distribution of the items, extended condolences to the victims and praised their resilience. They encouraged the communities to remain hopeful, noting that the government would continue to explore avenues to source additional support.
Neptune Prime noted that they also expressed gratitude to Action Against Hunger for promptly partnering with the agency to deliver relief at a critical time.
Many of the affected families are small-scale farmers and traders who lost not only their homes but also food, farming tools, and other essential belongings.
Authorities have also urged communities to adopt stronger preventive measures against fire outbreaks, especially during the dry season when such incidents are more frequent and destructive.
