Senator Ndume criticises Tinubu over imbalance in political appointments

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) has expressed concerns over the lopsided nature of political appointments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that they disproportionately favour a particular ethnic group and disregard the Federal Character principle.

Speaking on a News Programme, Ndume called the list of appointees circulating in the media “non-inclusive” and contrary to the spirit of Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Ndume, a vocal member of the ruling APC, emphasised that the President’s appointments violate the constitutional requirement that political positions should reflect Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. He stressed that although the President has the right to make appointments, they must adhere to Section 14(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates fairness in political appointments to ensure national unity.

While acknowledging that professional appointments, like military or police leadership, are not subject to this rule, Ndume criticised the current political appointees, urging the President to correct the imbalance.

He warned that failing to address the issue could have long-term consequences for the nation.

The Senator, who has often challenged government policies, reiterated that his criticism was in the best interest of Nigeria, asserting that as a lawmaker, it is his duty to oversee the executive and call out irregularities.

He also dismissed personal attacks from Tinubu’s supporters, stating that his criticism was based on principle, not personal animosity.
