LGBTQ+: US to recognize only two genders, male, female – Trump

In a controversial statement during his inaugural address on January 20, newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump declared that the United States government will officially recognize only two genders: male and female.

The pronouncement quickly sparked reactions from LGBTQ+ rights groups and social media users, with many criticizing the decision as a threat to the recognition and rights of transgender and non-binary individuals.

The policy announcement aligns with Trump’s campaign stance, which included opposition to gender inclusivity measures and promotion of traditional views on gender roles.

During his election campaign, Trump had called for “transgender insanity” to be removed from schools, a sentiment he reiterated in his inaugural address.

Trump’s return to office comes amidst a broader set of policies aimed at limiting immigration and challenging progressive reforms. His re-election has generated widespread anxiety, particularly among immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities who fear further restrictions under his administration.

During the inauguration ceremony, held at the Capitol Rotunda due to frigid weather conditions, Trump was joined by political figures, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Barack Obama, as well as thousands of supporters. However, the event also marked a moment of division, as Trump’s policies continue to draw sharp opposition.

The former president’s path to re-election was fraught with legal battles and political turmoil. In 2024, Trump was convicted for concealing a “hush money” payment related to a scandal during his 2016 campaign.

He also faced over 30 counts of business fraud, charges of inciting the January 6 Capitol attack, attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, and the retention of classified documents.

In his inaugural address, Trump also addressed the assassination attempt on his life in July 2024, when he was shot in the right ear during a political rally. “I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump stated, referencing the incident. “Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom and my life,” he added.
