85-Year-Old Christiana Akpunonu makes history with PhD defence at Uni Abuja

An 85-year-old Christiana Nweke Akpunonu, a lecturer with the Department of Mass Communication at Baze University, Abuja, successfully defended her PhD thesis at the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Abuja.

Her thesis, titled “The Impact of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria on Nigeria’s Health Watch – Fistula Programme on Women in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria,” explores the intersection of media and women’s health, focusing on how radio programming influences awareness and support for women affected by obstetric fistula in the FCT.

The defence, held on April 16, 2025, was presided over by External Examiner Prof. Irene Agunloye of the Centre for Gender and Women Studies, University of Jos. Also in attendance were Prof. Isa Mohammed Nurudeen of the Department of Economics, University of Abuja, representing the Dean of the Postgraduate School, as well as members of the Postgraduate Board of the Department of Theatre Arts.

Mrs Christian’s achievement has not only made history but also inspired a generation, proving that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
