566 households in Yobe receive relief aid after devastating windstorm

Story from Kasim Isa Muhammad

‎In a swift humanitarian response to the recent tropical windstorm that struck parts of Yobe State in 2025, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), in collaboration with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), has extended vital relief support to 566 affected households in Fika and Potiskum Local Government Areas.

The breakdown of the intervention shows that 329 households in Fika and 237 households in Potiskum benefited from the emergency assistance.

The initiative is part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s broader emergency response strategy and is designed to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable communities affected by the storm.

Neptune Prime noted that relief items distributed included Non-Food Item (NFI) Kits, Emergency Hygiene Kits, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) supplies, and Dignity Kits specifically designed for adolescent girls.

The intervention followed a joint rapid assessment and validation exercise conducted by Yobe SEMA and ACF to ensure accurate targeting of the most severely affected households, while priority was given to families who lost their homes, household belongings, and access to basic hygiene and sanitation services.

‎Each NFI kit contained essential household items such as plates, cups, cooking pots, a kitchen knife, tablespoons, ladles, blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, a rechargeable torchlight, laundry and bathing soap, reusable pads, a kettle, foldable mattresses, 20-litre and 10-litre jerrycans, a 20-litre bucket, a 25-litre basin, and carrying bags. These items were distributed across all 566 households in both LGAs to help them restore basic living conditions.

‎In addition to this, adolescent girls in Fika received specially designed Dignity Kits which included multipurpose soap, two 20-litre jerrycans with covers, a 25-litre basin, aquatabs for water purification, reusable sanitary pads, women’s underwear, a rechargeable torchlight, a kettle, a potty, and a carrying bag.

‎The WASH and Emergency Hygiene Kits distributed to households included soap, detergents, sanitary pads, buckets, kettles, water basins, aquatabs, and jerricans, critical items needed to maintain hygiene and prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of the storm.

During the distribution exercise, Mohammed Liman Kingimi, WASH Project Manager for ACF, assured YOSEMA of the organisation’s continued partnership. He stated that more support would be delivered depending on future needs assessments, the availability of resources, and the direction of ACF’s ongoing projects in Yobe State.

‎Executive Secretary of YOSEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje, expressed gratitude to ACF and other humanitarian partners for their timely response and support to the state’s recovery efforts.

‎He urged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the relief items to support their recovery journey and stabilisation. He further reiterated SEMA’s commitment to ensuring that emergency support reaches all vulnerable groups affected by natural disasters across the state.

‎Dr. Goje also disclosed that ACF would soon provide additional Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) assistance to the 566 affected households.

‎ According to him, this next phase of intervention is expected to help the victims rebuild their lives and restore their means of survival after the devastating windstorm.

‎In addition to the relief provided in Fika and Potiskum, SEMA confirmed that similar interventions are planned for other affected Local Government Areas, including Fune.
