23-year-old cashier in court for alleged ₦1.1m fraud

A 23-year-old woman, Daniel Mercy, was arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for alleged fraud.
The defendant, who resides at Ado Community High School, Omisanajana Area in Ado-Ekiti, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Insp. Sodiq Adeniyi informed the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offense between February 1 and March 12 at Owowi Global Venture Limited Store on Ajilosun Street. He stated that Mercy, a cashier at the company, fraudulently stole and converted a cash sum of ₦1.1 million that was entrusted to her for her own use.

Adeniyi noted that the offense violated the provisions of Section 295 and is punishable under Section 302(8b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021. He asked the court to adjourn the case so he could prepare and gather witnesses.
The defendant’s counsel, Mr. Adedayo Awe, requested that the court grant his client bail, promising that she would not fail to appear.
Chief Magistrate Dolamu Babalogbon granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦50,000 with one surety in the same amount. The case was adjourned until October 9 for a hearing.
