Belgium to formally recognize Palestinian State, impose sanctions on Israel

Story by Susan Mbamah

Belgium is set to formally recognize a Palestinian state and implement sanctions against the Israeli government, according to an announcement made by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot on Tuesday. This decision will be made during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York.

Why it matters:

Belgium’s action contributes to a growing international movement to recognize Palestinian statehood. This move puts increased pressure on Western nations to take concrete steps and challenges Israel’s ongoing occupation.

Belgium joins more than a dozen other Western countries, including France, Canada, and the U.K., that have committed to recognising Palestine during the September 9–23 UNGA session.

The Israeli government has voiced concerns about these pledges, stating that they undermine negotiations and reward Hamas.

The United States maintains that Palestinian statehood should only come from direct talks with Israel. However, many Palestinians and human rights groups consider this position unworkable due to the occupation.

According to Prévot, “Palestine will be recognised by Belgium at the UN session! And firm sanctions are being imposed against the Israeli government.”

The Belgian Foreign Ministry stated that the sanctions will include banning imports from Israeli settlements, reviewing procurement contracts with Israeli firms, and declaring Hamas leaders “persona non grata.” The sanctions on settlement products are consistent with existing EU policy, which considers settlements illegal under international law.

This decision reflects increasing frustration in Europe over Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Palestinians have long sought statehood in these occupied territories, with Jerusalem as their capital.

Currently, over 140 countries worldwide already recognise Palestine, although most Western powers have not done so until recently.
